House Dust - The Ultimate Allergy Cocktail

!±8± House Dust - The Ultimate Allergy Cocktail

When was the last time you dusted your house? That fine layer of soft, grey-white dust that settles on your knick-knacks and side tables seems pretty innocuous, but it is actually quite a trouble-maker. Dust is something like a potpourri of allergens. Dead skin cells, dust mites and their excrement, animal dander, pollen and spores are commonly found in your average dust bunny. So basically, if there is something in this world that will trigger an allergic reaction or just irritate your airways, you can find it in dust.

If you take a pinch of dust out of your vacuum bag and put it under a microscope, here are a few or the things that you would find:Paint particles (which depending on the paint, can contain lead) Plant and insect body parts Smoke particles Particles from auto and industrial emissions Heavy hydrocarbon waste from your oil or gas heater Dust mites and their feces Mold spores Constructions debris (saw dust, drywall dust, etc) Rodent excrement (which becomes airborne as it dehydrates) Bacteria Asbestos Specks of metal from door hinges or other places where metal is creating friction against metal Heavy metals (lead, cadmium and mercury) Even if you happen to have lungs of steel or commit random acts of dusting (like the ladies in the Swiffer Duster ads), for those with allergies or asthma, it is important to keep dust levels down inside your home. Depending on the size and make-up of dust particles, they can stay afloat in the air for several hours up to a couple of days! Even non-allergic individuals can be affected by dust, simply because some of the elements can be absorbed through the skin as well as inhaled. This means that asbestos and lead dust from the paint in an older house or building as well as other heavy metals can be harmful if they land on your skin. An element like rodent waste that has become dehydrated is easily inhaled with other dust particles and has the potential to cause some serious health risks (an outbreak of acute pneumonia was attributed to inhaling the fine dust of rodent urine and feces--not a pleasant thought, is it?). Things to keep in mind while dusting:
Try to clean high traffic rooms like bedrooms and living rooms on a weekly basis, paying careful attention to areas where dust can accumulate (corners, picture frames, door frames, window sills, etc.) If you have allergies or asthma, you should have a non-allergic person dust and vacuum for you It takes about 20 minutes for dust to settle after sweeping or dusting, so after cleaning, step outside for a few minutes so that you won't get your lungs filled with dust There is no hard and fast solution to keeping dust from being produced, because every situation is different. The amounts of dust you find in your house may correlate to its age or simply to the part of the country you live in. Typically, using a HEPA quality furnace filter ( like those made by Dynamic ) will help reduce the overall amount of dust in your air.

Hardwood Vs Laminate Wood Flooring - What You Should Know!

!±8± Hardwood Vs Laminate Wood Flooring - What You Should Know!

I can't deny that wood floors are lovely to look at, warm and inviting, but the same effect can be obtained with laminate wood for a lot less money and headaches! And in many cases laminate wood may be the better choice. Not only does it look like "wood", under most situations it will out-perform real hardwoods...

Since the very beginning of laminate wood floors, improvements have been a constant endeavor with manufacturers, like Alloc, Mannington and Dupont, to make this flooring material a "perfect" product. The "wear" (top) layer is made of aluminum oxide, a shield about as strong as steel and penetrating it is near impossible.

With hardwood flooring not much has changed since the 70s to improve it's tolerance of normal living conditions. Other than developing a new type of finish to give it more protection, there's not much that can be done to change its profile. It is what it is, a lovely, natural product...

But lets be honest, there are some areas where any kind of wood flooring products is not the best choice. There are risk involved if you use wood in a kitchen or bathroom. If the flooring is porous, like hardwoods, it is a fort for harboring bacteria and germs.

Waterproof or Not?

When I hear the word "waterproof" I think "unaffected by moisture", don't you? Well that's not the case with either hardwoods or laminate wood. Flooring manufacturers marketing their wood flooring materials as "waterproof" is a selling point, and why not they are in the business to "sell", but the truth is wood and water/moisture do not mix.

The thing with hardwoods or laminate wood is neither one is totally waterproof... Too much exposure to moisture and hardwoods will expand, and as it dries it contracts. This type of action will cause all sorts of issues with finished hardwood floors.

Laminate wood tolerates moisture much better than hardwoods. The HPL (high-pressure laminate) is constructed with sealed waxed edges, this is in addition to the Aluminum Oxide surface coating, that increases water resistance. But if exposed too long to moisture/water it will buckle.

But between the two, laminate wood tolerates moisture and bacteria far better than hardwoods.

The Affect From Impacts

As hard and durable as hardwoods is, they are easily dinged from impacts! Hard to believe, but true! Drop a sharp edged object or heavy pan on the hardwood floor and it will leave a mark..

Do the same thing with laminate wood and it won't faze the flooring at all... The Aluminum Oxide surface coating on laminate can be compared to steel. Hard as a rock!

Scratching The Wood

Hardwood floors scratch very easily. You have to be very careful when moving furniture, or anything of considerable weight or with a rough bottom, not to drag it but to lift it, unless you have floor guards on the bottom of whatever object you want to move. Outside grit will scratch the wood, too, so it is very important to keep it swept up and use entry way area rugs to prevent bringing outside grit inside.

Laminate wood will scratch, but not so easily, and as with hardwood floors, putting rugs in front of outside entry ways is a smart way to protect your flooring. My laminate wood kitchen floor is 7 years old and there is not one scratch on it. Once again the surface finish is what provides such good protection.

Staining

Hardwoods are porous and may absorb a stain like an ink blotter if not cleaned up quickly, even with a good finish on the wood you have to be very careful not to let something like wine or blueberries just sit, they need to be wiped up quickly to prevent staining.

Laminate wood is not porous but will stain, too, but the stains can usually be removed with a small amount of acetone or denatured alcohol and a clean, preferable white, cloth. When staining occurs on this type of flooring it is the protective surface finish that is stained

Maintenance

Hardwood floors are easy enough to sweep or dust and so is mopping, but it requires cleaning products made for hardwood floors. Eventually, hardwood floors will need refinishing or even sanding and refinishing, but can be sanded may times over. Maintenance can be fairly costly if the floor needs a new finish. If it is necessary to replace any of the flooring it can be done board by board without replacing the whole floor..

Laminate wood floors don't require much in the care and maintenance department. Just sweep often and light mop when needed. No special products are necessary. Swiffer products are perfect for laminate floors. Another thing with laminate wood is you can replace single planks without replacing the whole floor.

Helpful Tips on Cleaning Window Blinds

!±8± Helpful Tips on Cleaning Window Blinds

While we all want to keep our window blinds clean and well maintained it might not always be the most enjoyable task on our 'to do' lists. In all honesty, most people never bother cleaning their window blinds until it reaches the point of being overtaken by dust leaving no choice but to clean them or risk never seeing out again.

When it comes to the cleaning of either aluminum of vinyl blinds you are in luck as they are each fairly easy to clean. You can use soap and water, a vacuum cleaner (with proper attachments of course), feather duster, dusting cloth, or a Swiffer duster.

Below are some things you may wish to keep in mind when it comes to cleaning your blinds.

Generally speaking, it is much easier to clean often and regularly using a dusting mitt, dust cloth, or vacuum cleaner with a round brush attachment in order to maintain a nice clean look for your aluminum or vinyl blinds. In fact, taking these steps weekly or twice a month can greatly reduce how often you will need to remove your blinds for more intense cleaning.
Chemically treated dust cloths are effective at removing dust from in between the slats and from the surface of your blinds.
If you must perform deeper cleaning that requires removing your blinds and spraying them with water, make sure that the slats are down in order to avoid damage.
You may wish to lay your blinds in a tub full of warm sudsy water for cleaning. Be sure to lay a towel on the bottom of the tubs surface in order to avoid scratches.
Using a sponge (either wet or dry) to wipe your blinds is another effective method for cleaning them on a regular basis.
Avoid using metal materials such as brill-o pads in order to clean your blinds as they may damage the surface.

You should make sure that your windows are clean and free of dust before re-hanging your blinds. You should also make sure that all the nooks and crannies in your blinds are dry, as moisture will act as a dust magnet.

Wood blinds pose different problems and require different procedures for cleaning than your average vinyl or aluminum blinds may present. You cannot use water for the cleaning of wood blinds, which means that several of the methods mentioned above simply will not work for wooden blinds.

These tips are better to keep in mind when cleaning wooden blinds.

Dusting mitts, dust cloths, and vacuum cleaners with round brush attachments are excellent choices for cleaning wood blinds, they may be used while the blinds are hanging or while they blinds are laying flat for cleaning.
Some wood blinds may be cleaned with a damp (very lightly damp) cloth. Check the manufacturers instructions before doing so and if you can't find the instructions, avoid using liquid all together.
Move from left to right or right to left when dusting horizontal blinds and use downward strokes when it comes to dusting vertical blinds.
If you want to focus on a particular spot pay close attention to the problem area with a dry dusting clothe.
Fabric blinds tend to attract more dust than the other blinds mentioned in this article. As a result they will require more regular cleaning in order to avoid excessive buildups of dust.

Vacuuming and brushing are the most effective methods of removing dust from blinds made of fabric. Doing so will also prolong the beauty of these particular types of blinds.
You may clean them by soaking them in water but be wary when doing so as fading and discoloration is a potential problem when doing so. You could elect to take them to the dry cleaners rather than risk damaging them by washing them at home.

One final note: if you wipe down any of your blinds with a sheet of fabric softener once you've cleaned them you will find that they are more likely to repel dust for a little while longer than if you do nothing at all.
